Gio Gonzalez’s Return is a Win For Brewers
Milwaukee Brewers are in need of some help with their pitching and hitting at this point of the season. Brewers’ offense has the players to get going, and at some point, it will happen to them. Pitching remains a question mark. Yes, Jimmy Nelson is coming back. Few have done alright, but they needed some serious help. Some thought Dallas Keuchel, but instead, the Brew Crew went with Gio Gonzalez who finished up last year with the team. Gonzalez joins the team at a cheaper rate with a two-million dollar deal for one year with a potential extra two million for incentives. This is the right move by Milwaukee.
Consider this a mulligan for the Milwaukee Brewers. After passing on Wade Miley and Jordan Lyes in the offseason, they’re finally getting an extra veteran arm to help stabilize their rotation. They needed some veteran experience, and Gonzalez is the perfect fit. He loved his time in Milwaukee and fit in right in with the Brewers clubhouse. My assumption is he will take the place of Corbin Burnes in the rotation, therefore, slating Gio’s first start likely Tuesday versus Colorado at Miller Park.
When Jimmy Nelson returns, the Brewers rotation starts to take shape and look pretty good. Jhoulys Chacin, Zach Davies, Gonzalez, Nelson, and Brandon Woodruff. That’s not a bad rotation. Chase Anderson could be thrown in the mix too if Woodruff were to struggle in the coming weeks. Milwaukee made a push towards veteran pitchers after dismissing them in the offseason. We’ll see if this helps with their starting pitching woes this season and can start making a push back up to the top of the National League Central. This recent losing streak means there is work to do with this team.
Welcome back, Gio. I hope you find the magic from the end of last year.
Charlie.
