Packers Bet on Potential With Rashan Gary
Before the Green Bay Packers picked at number 12, we didn’t know what the team might do for a draft pick. With the free agent signings they made this offseason, Cole Madison returning, and a new coach, the choices could be anything. Green Bay decided to further their defense by selecting Rashan Gary from Michigan with the 12th overall pick. Many people went to Twitter to express their frustration with the pick. Gary was one of the more controversial players in the game from a tape perspective and a scout perspective. He also might have an issue with his shoulder. This pick by Brian Gutekunst highlights two things – Gary has unlimited potential and he is versatile

Gary is a freak athlete. Gutekunst likes adding freak athletes to his roster. The production is disappointing to say the least from Gary, but according to draft people, he was high on people’s boards all along. Packers believe with their coaching staff that they can unlock Gary’s potential as a football player. Couple things to think about with the former Michigan standout. One, he played on an elite defense his last two years of college. When that happens, you sometimes get lost in the shuffle because other great defenders are making the plays. Their front-seven had two first rounders and a likely second round pick. The second thing is Gary might not have known how to combine everything together. We see this with the NBA where guys struggle in their only year of college then become rockstars in the pros.
The other part of Gary that you like is he can play multiple positions. Gary could be an outside linebacker or they can move him inside. In the conference call with the media, the Packers first rounder modeled his game after Julius Peppers and Cam Jordan. If he is that type of player for the Packers, Gutekunst hit a fucking home run. The Packers general manager continues to look for guys that play multiple positions. That is a growing trend when looking at players who could be Gute’s guys.
Welcome to the team, Rashan. Let’s get it.
Charlie.
