When the Seattle Seahawks announced that they would be trading down, I said to Nolan Murphy ‘It could be the Packers here.’ That is what actually happened. Whether Green Bay was trying to get Noah Fant which didn’t work or the plan all along was Darnell Savage Jr. They have a new safety on the team. Darnell Savage Jr. is a monster. For the concerns that people have about their first pick Rashan Gary, Packers nation seems fired up for Savage. How can you not be? The former Maryland standout carries a 4.36 40 speed, loves to tackle and makes plays all over the field. Sign me up right now.

#Maryland S Darnell Savage to the #Packers at No.21 — Versatility in the secondary. Savage can cover down vs. slot sets, fill the alley in the run game & find the ball. Watch him break on the out-cut here. #NFL href=”https://t.co/yWbMWbRlzj”>pic.twitter.com/yWbMWbRlzj

The thing that you love about Savage Jr. is some of his best games were against the best competition in the Big Ten. In the shootout versus Ohio State, Savage Jr. was fucking everywhere on the field. Same with the Michigan game. ESPN Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. loved his potential and thinks he could be a really good player. As someone said about him with his willingness to tackle and get his nose in on every play, he is the anti-Ha Ha Clinton-Dix which is ironic considering that the Packers traded the pick they got for Ha-Ha to get him. He could end as a a starter out of the box for the Packers considering the lack of depth at safety.

Again, we see a theme with Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst. He wants guys who will be versatile and freak athletes. That is the perfect recipe for him. Savage is a safety but he can do so much more. The speed he has means covering a slot receiver isn’t a problem (Say this in your best Shannon Sharpe voice, please). He is a playmaker and some have compared him to Eddie Jackson of the Chicago Bears. Eddie does so much for the Bears secondary, and we saw how good Adrian Amos was next to him last well. Maybe there is more truth to that comparison.

Savage has the best name on the team, and if we ever get into the shirt business, there will be a Savage Szn shirt.

Charlie.
