Wide Receiver Is Still a Priority For Packers

Green Bay Packers signed a wide receiver on Tuesday afternoon. They added Devin Funchess to their receiver room. But that does not mean Green Bay is done with the receiver position. Green Bay knows that this is arguably one of the best receiver drafts of all-time. This isn’t hyperbole. There is a wealth of receiver options for teams. This means Green Bay and general manager Brian Gutekunst can go after some top-tier talent. The exciting thing for the Packers is they do not need a receiver in the first round with the depth at this position.
Here’s the thing about the swath of receivers, there could be some intriguing options there at 30. All 10 guys on ESPN’s Mel Kiper’s big board have been considered the first-round draft picks in someone’s mock draft. Now, it will be shocking if 10 teams draft a wide receiver in the first round. Further, some options might fall based on other guys being available for teams. That happens every year. Packers might find with the option to draft a receiver they did not expect to be there at 30. It should not surprise people if players like Tee Higgins, Justin Jefferson slip in the draft.
Even if Green Bay doesn’t draft a receiver in the first round, the options are plentiful in the second and third rounds. Packers’ fans will light the sports radio lines on fire if this happens in April. For me, my outrage depends on what else was available for Green Bay. If Green Bay drafted a linebacker, middle or outside, that’s perfectly fine. If they draft an offensive tackle, that makes sense too. But let’s say a running back is selected, the outrage will be there. The best player available is a motto I still believe in. People do poke holes with that theory though. But like anything else, it is subjective with the players available. Green Bay has three major holes, and if they don’t fill one of them in the first round, there is reason to be upset.
We will see what the Packers do at pick 30. Debates will rage on throughout the month about what Green Bay should do and many will be convinced that it needs to be a receiver.
