CFB Picks Week 6: Streaks Are Meant To Be Broken

Must-See TV
22. Florida State at 10. Miami (-3) 7:00 pm ABC – Is this the first time in a long while where Florida State-Miami means something. Florida State loses another game, they are in a full spiral. If Miami wins and if it’s in a big way, we might talk playoffs with the Canes. Brad Kaaya should have his way with this bad Florida State defense although if rain is an issue, I could see that actually helping Florida State and Dalvin Cook who always shows up for Miami games. I’m taking Miami, but I don’t feel good about it. Maybe a field goal is involved, I don’t know. MIA 30-27
9. Tennessee at 8. Texas A&M (-7) 2:30 pm CBS – Can the Tennessee magic happen again? Short answer: No. Texas A&M is really good. John Chavis has his defense playing ball in a major way with Myles Garrett and Daeshawn Hall leading the charge. Joshua Dobbs will have to do it all again for yet another week. At some point, he’s going to need some help, right? Texas A&M’s offense isn’t what it used to be with Kevin Sumlin, but Trevor Knight can still manage the game good enough plus Trayvon Williams is a promising young rusher. Aggies have a surprise blowout here with Tennessee collectively running out of gas. TENN 35-14
25. Virginia Tech at 17. North Carolina (-1.5) 2:30 pm ESPN – If the weather holds, this might be the funnest game of the weekend. Virginia Tech is flying under the radar as one of the best starts in football. At the same time, Mitch Trubisky is starting to garner some hype for his play of late. This game has a chance to be back and forth. Jerod Evans and Travon McMillian is a lethal one-two punch of the Hokies who could give a Carolina defense some issues. Bud Foster’s defense is going to be the difference here. Trubisky is going up against one of the best pass defenses in the country thus far, and I could see him struggling a bit. Give me the Hokies! VT 35-33
1. Alabama (-14) at 16. Arkansas 6:00 pm ESPN – Tough call here. I’m not really that impressed with Bama this season. Their pass defense isn’t great, and Arkansas can pass the ball a little bit with Austin Allen. Now will Brett Bielema abandon his usual thing and go to a pass-heavy offense? I’m not sure. He’s a stubborn dude and needs to think less of his running game. Alabama found a rushing game of late with Joshua Jacobs, and that could be the difference here. I’m not sold Bama is a two-touchdown favorite on the road. Think this game is real close with a bad Bielema coaching decision costing the Hogs. Bama 27-23
Definitely Worth Some Channel Flips
Texas vs. 20. Oklahoma (-11.5) (Played in Dallas) 11:00 am FS1 – Charlie Strong’s last stand? Oklahoma returns to the top 25 after their big win versus TCU. They looked stellar with Baker Mayfield leading the charge. But they still cannot stop the pass. This could mean a huge day for Shane Buechele. Eleven and a half is way too many points for what should be an actual Red River Shootout. This should be an upset pick of the week, but I’m riding with Texas. These kids love Charlie Strong and know the headlines out there now where they have to save his job. It starts on Saturday and things are about to get awkward. TEX 42-38
5. Washington (-9.5) at Oregon 6:30 pm FOX – Can they break the streak? Washington hasn’t beat Oregon in eleven years. We already saw Tennessee break their Florida streak so maybe Huskies and Hurricanes are the next up for it. Washington showed the world they’re legit, and now face a wounded Ducks team which could make for a blood bath. Jake Browning struggled versus Oregon last season, but it seems like this is a different year for Washington. I’m starting to buy into the hype and can’t trust Oregon with a first-time freshman quarterback. WASH 38-17
Bet of the Week
21. Colorado at USC (-5) 3:00 pm Pac-12 Network – You’re probably thinking this going in the Colorado direction – WRONG. I love USC in this spot. Trojans are kinda sorta back with their young quarterback Sam Darnold, and sometimes when teams get back into the Top 25 for the first time in awhile, it doesn’t work out well. Even though Buffs are great against the pass (9th in the nation), they haven’t played a quarterback as good as Darnold yet this season. Trojans win this one. USC 31-21
Bar Watch of the Week
Washington State at 15. Stanford (-7.5) 9:30 pm ESPN – Bar Watch brought to you by Vodka Soda’s. This is our first good bar watch in awhile. Some people love Washington State in this game. They gave Stanford all they could handled last season. Washington State is doing what they did last year as they grew stronger as the season went on. They dominated Oregon with a major offensive effort. There are reasons to be concerned a bit with Stanford, but I feel some overreactions from last Friday will get a market correction after this one. STAN 30-23
Worth a Channel Flip
Arizona at 24. Utah (-10) 9:00 pm FS1 – You could almost make a bet of the week for this one. Arizona is banged up on offense and allowed a ton of points thus far with Washington and UCLA. Utah is coming off a tough loss to Cal where their defense couldn’t really handle the Bear Raid offense. That might favor Arizona, but I hate how banged up they are coming into Salt Lake City. UTAH 48-21
3. Clemson (-16.5) at Boston College (Played on Friday) 6:30 pm ESPN – This is Clemson’s second straight road game on a non-Saturday. Boston College’s offense continues to be worse than Trump’s numbers with Hispanic voters. I like Clemson here even if it’s a letdown spot after the big Louisville win. They pull away as the game goes on. CLEM 30-7
8. Houston (-17) at Navy 2:00 pm CBS Sports Network – This could be fun even with a 17-point spread. Navy did have some issues with Houston in the American Conference Championship last year, and since this is the same Houston team basically, it could be a long day in Annapolis. Always feel like Navy is friskier than they are, the Notre Dame effect. HOU 52-20
Sleep Off Your Hangover
Indiana at 2. Ohio State 2:30 pm ABC
4. Michigan at Rutgers 6:00 pm ESPN2
19. Boise State at New Mexico (Played on Friday) 8:00 CBS Sports Network –
