CFB Picks Week 9: Unbeaten Road Test

Gather your friends and grab some beers
4. Washington (-11) at 17. Utah 2:30 pm FS1 – The battle for Pac-12 supremacy. There’s no way Utah should be an eleven point dog at home. They’re too good for a home team. I worried about how Utah generates offense versus this defense. Joe Williams will need another huge day on the ground. Jake Browning will face his stiffest competition yet even if the Utes looks shaky defensively last Saturday. What worries me is Washington blitzkriegs teams, and Utah is a slow starter. That could be a bad combo. Utes battle back, but it’s not enough. WASH 20-17
3. Clemson (-4) at 13. Florida State 7:00 pm ABC – What’s the best Clemson road win? Auburn doesn’t count as they were still finding themselves. I’m not big on the Tigers here. Deshaun Watson has been average, and their defense hasn’t been good against good teams. Wayne Gallman backs helps Clemson a ton. Florida State is starting to gain steam especially on defense. All of the sudden, Noles seem to be back to form. Dalvin Cook is a big game running back machine. I’m taking Noles here as Deondre Francios has two big plays that prove to be the difference. FSU 21-17
7. Nebraska at 11. Wisconsin (-9.5) 6:00 pm ESPN – Preview is coming
10. West Virginia (-3.5) at Oklahoma State 11:00 am FOX – One of the more fun games to watch this weekend. We’ll know how good West Virginia’s defense is after this game. Oklahoma State is loaded on offense led by Mason Rudolph and James Washington. They are as good of a QB-WR duo in the country. Kansas might have figured out this offense a bit which would concern me if I’m a Cowboys fan. Another concerning fact is Rushel Shell should run all over the Pokes defense. Mountaineers dominate again. WVU 30-14
Definitely Keep An Eye On
8. Baylor (-3.5) at Texas 2:30 pm ABC – Baylor is doing it more with defense than they are with their offense although it could come to life playing a team like Texas and their defense. Everyone can score on Texas, and the same can’t be said for the Longhorns. They bottomed out versus Kansas State and not sure how they recover against a better than usual Baylor defense. Baylor keeps finding ways to win, and it happens again Saturday. Look for Seth Russell to get some of that swagger back. BAY 34-21
14. Florida (-8) vs. Georgia (Played in Jacksonville) 2:30 pm CBS – Cocktail Party is an easy one to pick this year. Jacob Eason is a good, young quarterback, but he also turns the ball over way too much. That’s not a good thing versus a Florida defense that gets turnovers. Eason’s rough day will tell the story. Gators are well-rested and their offense showed some life versus Mizzou. I like Gators here to get a late cover. UF 30-20
15. Auburn (-4) at Ole Miss 6:15 SEC Network – This is an odd line. Auburn looks to be one of the best teams in college football of the past month. They have a killer running attack, and Ole Miss just gave up an enormous amount of yards to Leonard Fournette and LSU. What gives? I’m really not sure. Auburn gets Kerryan Johsnon back from injury which makes the running game even stronger plus this tough Tigers defense gets a turnover-happy Swag Kelly. Give me the Tigers and can’t wait for Vegas to prove me wrong. AUB 27-13
Upset of the Week
13. Boise State (-13) at Wyoming 6:00 pm CBS Sports Network – This isn’t going to be the only unbeaten team who goes down, but I like Wyoming in this one. This is a fun running back matchup with Jeremy McNichols and Brian Hill. Both are some of the greats in college football. Cowboys will need to force some turnovers to make up for their poor defense. I believe they can do it and win a shootout. WYO 45-41
Bet of the Week
2. Michigan (-24.5) at Michigan State 11:00 am ESPN – I don’t care what the spread is for Michigan. They are sharks who smell blood in the water. Michigan State had some big games versus Wolverines in the past, but that’s in the past. Michigan State can’t stop the run which means bad things as Ty Issac and Chris Evans are going to run wild. MICH 52-10
Northwestern at 6. Ohio State (-27) 2:30 pm ESPN – Even though Ohio State is coming off a loss, Northwestern feels like an obvious cover. Their offense led by Justin Jackson is quite potent. Ohio State has some real issues defensively, and that will show in this game. But no upset alert as J.T. Barrett and the Ohio State rushing attack will break some big plays against a soft Northwestern defense. OSU 49-31
Bar Watch of the Week
Washington State (-13) at Oregon State 9:45 pm ESPN – You bet we’re wetting that beak again with Wazzu. There are two bar watch games this week which is a special occasion, but this is much more attractive game. This is a massive trap game for Washington State with two home games upcoming. Luke Falk should have his way with Beavers defense, but this game will go down to the wire. WSU 34-33
Worth a Channel Flip
22. Navy at South Florida (-6.5) (Played on Friday) 6:00 pm ESPN2 – Why do people keep disrespecting Navy? They got no love last week by Vegas as well. I do have some bad news for them this week. South Florida is really talented. Both teams will score a bunch, but I’m taking the best player on the field in Quinton Flowers. He’s too good for Navy’s defense, and they get a big time win. USF 40-37
18. Tennessee (-13.5) at South Carolina 6:15 pm ESPN2 – For the first time in awhile, Tennessee is playing an unranked opponent, and that’s a relief for them. Gamecocks shouldn’t give this fresh offense any trouble as Josh Dobbs looks spry after a bye week and dominates South Carolina. TENN 41-10
24. Penn State (-14) at Purdue 11:00 am ABC – Keep a close eye on this one. This feels like a closer than usual game with Purdue having a renewed spirit. I also think Nittany Lions shouldn’t be favored by two touchdowns against any team. Penn State will survive with a couple of late scores. PSU 27-21
Sleep Off Your Hangover
5. Louisville at Virginia 11:00 am ESPN2
Kansas at 6. Oklahoma 6:00 pm FS1
New Mexico State at 9. Texas A&M 6:00 pm ESPNU –
