Giannis’ Explanation on His Three-Point Shooting Makes Sense But Falls Short

Giannis Antetokounmpo had a solid night from the field. He scored 33 points, he grabbed 14 rebounds. It’s tough to be mad at a performance like this one. That said, there were still some criticisms that came out of the Game 3 victory. Most notably, the Giannis three-point shooting. Giannis went a brutal 1-for-8 from three and for the series, he’s 3-for-24. Not surprisingly, there was a good chunk of questions after the game about this to the Greek Freak. He answered the questions and explains that it is about instincts and making the right decisions. But in my mind, that seems like a boilerplate answer and doesn’t really lead us into why he thinks it’s a good idea.

From what people will tell you who watch the Bucks in pregame, Giannis makes these shots. These shots fall. I think he sees being wide open and takes it versus trying to see if there’s another way to help the team. Even if Giannis took a few steps in, he would force the defender up and create a new opportunity for someone else. I don’t think Giannis should stop shooting threes altogether, rather, he needs to know when to do it versus when not to. A situation we’ve seen far too often is Giannis shooting a three as almost a last resort and a way to help Milwaukee score. Those are the times where he needs to attack because that’s where Milwaukee is at their best. Let’s hope those instincts tell him that moving forward.
