What a football game. You always point to 2006 Rose Bowl as one of the best college football games ever, and this game will enter into that same conversation. Deshaun Watson threw for 400 yards against this vaunted Alabama defense. Crimson Tide started out as number one to begin the year, and they’ll end it at number two. Watson and Clemson denied Alabama’s second straight national title plus Nick Saban remains one championship behind Bear Bryant.

This fourth quarter was an absolute whirlwind. Clemson trailed by 10 points to begin and only had 14. They ended up with 35 total. As the teams went back and forth with Tigers ending it with an out route to Hunter Renfrow. Dabo Sweeney will not get enough credit for his clock management skills who drained down the clock and made damn sure Clemson was the last team with the ball. Watson played under such composure down the stretch creating plays with Mike Williams, Renfrow and Jordan Leggett. Truly an incredible fourth quarter that was shades of Vince Young.

This is great for college football. Alabama is still the king, but Clemson took a shot at the iron throne. In the first three years of the College Football Playoff, three different conferences have won the grand finale. Maybe the Pac-12 or the Big 12 is next, but regardless, this makes the sport even more intriguing going forward. Alabama will go on their redemption tour with Jalen Hurts, one of the Heisman front-runners, next late August taking on Florida State while Clemson begins their National Championship defense against Kent State at Death Valley.

What a sport, what a game.
