Aaron Rodgers is getting older by the day. We all are, really. Rodgers knows that Green Bay will likely look for his replacement in the coming years. People will make too big of a deal of it. It is natural. People went over the top when it came to Jimmy Garappolo getting drafted in New England. Same goes for when New Orleans added Teddy Bridgewater. Or Pittsburgh and Mason Rudolph. It is part of being a quarterback. When asked about the comments made by Brian Gutekunst regarding drafting a quarterback, Rodgers welcomed one to come to town and enjoy being his backup.

I would not take this quote out of context. This isn’t some shunning of the new guy. Rodgers will enjoy working with his heir apparent, but he is not planning on retiring any time soon. This is part of the reason why I made the case a few weeks ago that Packers should look at waiting two years or so to get a rookie quarterback. Quarterbacks play longer and longer these days. I do think upgrading the backup is a good idea for a guy like Marcus Mariota or Josh Rosen. Yet it is not important to land that rookie quarterback just yet unless Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst knows something we do not.

Rodgers is a competitive dude. We forget that sometimes by his demeanor. I like that he said it like he’s the king of the castle. That side of Rodgers doesn’t show up on the sidelines and on the field as much as it used to, I hope he gets back to that next year and beyond.
