Kolten Wong Showed Off Why He’s a Gold Glove Winner Yesterday
This has been said before on the blog, but it’s worth noting again, you don’t think about needing good defense in baseball until it happens. Last year, Milwaukee’s defense was subpar. Keston Hiura struggled. Brewers had no first base option, and their third baseman could barely get the ball to first. Now, you watch the team this year especially Kolten Wong, and it’s like ‘Damn, that’s what it is like to be good at second base.’ Wong made a tremendous play at the position yesterday. Wong had a diving stop at the fringe to prevent any more funny business from happening in the eighth inning. Brent Suter loved it on the mound.

Wong is one of the better Brewers’ defenders in the last decade or so. Orlando Arica was good, but not to the level of Wong. I’m trying to think if there have been others who are in the category of Wong. Travis Shaw got nominated for a Gold Glove back in 2018, but I don’t know if Shaw’s defense matches what Wong does on a nightly basis. I feel like there’s a Wong highlight like this one at least once a week.
